The Society
The Newbury & District Agricultural
Society is a Registered Charity established with the aim
of promoting agriculture, horticulture, forestry, rural crafts
and skills and educating the public in these areas. All that the
Society does is in pursuit of this aim; whether it
be by way of "passive learning" through
welcoming the public to the Royal County of Berkshire
Show, and the Ploughing Match; or through direct educational
initiatives such as problem solving days and the Food
& Farming Challenge. |
The Society put on the first Newbury Show at Enborne Gate Farm on
28th September 1909 and has been staging this annual Show ever since
with brief gaps during the wars. The Show has been held in various
venues around Newbury and has developed into a two-day Show in 1976.
The Society purchased its current home, Newbury Showground, at the
intersection of the M4 and A34 in 1984. Since then the event has
gone from strength to strength; now known as the Royal County of
Berkshire Show, it is a highly respected agricultural and rural event
and ranks within the top ten agricultural shows in the country.
The Society's social events provide educational
and networking opportunities for our members and the local community.
Details of the organisational structure are available
from the Show Office. The Society is controlled by a Board of Management,
but the organisation of the Shows is the primary responsibility of
Shows Council.
New members are always welcome, and we have special
events organised for our younger members.
Please browse the Membership and Social
Events pages for further details.
