Some 60 members thoroughly enjoyed the farm walk, by kind permission of Waitrose.  The morning saw a trip to Boreland Farm, Upper Woodford, Salisbury.  Home of a 700 sow outdoor breeding unit with a separate 750 place straw nursery indoor site.  After changing into bio security overalls plus over boots a guided tour of the farm followed with stops at various points along the way.  A delicious hog roast followed before departing fro the Newbury store. Steve Corbett, Branch Manager, and his team then guided the party round the store and included a presentation by the cheese buyer and plenty of samples!

Tuesday 24th June, Members Race Evening

Some 300 members enjoyed a summers evening racing by kind invitation of Newbury Racecourse.  Winning bets were sparse amongst the assembled members but everyone enjoyed the beautiful evening.

Saturday 20th June, Summer Party

The party was held in the magnificent gardens of West Woodhay House, near Newbury, by kind permission of Harry and Sarah Henderson.

The celebration, which is just one of many events for members during the 100th year of the society, coincided with the biannual West Woodhay Garden Show giving members, many of whom had been to the show, the chance to enjoy an exclusive tour of the garden and grounds in the late evening sunshine. With accompaniment from a jazz band, there was a taste of summer with jugs of pimms and a sumptuous buffet provided by sponsors Waitrose.

Simon Carter, the Shows Chairman of The Newbury & District Agricultural Society for 2009, said: “This was a wonderful occasion marking this very special centenary year for The Newbury & District Agricultural Society. With so many members present, it set the seal on the build up to this year’s Royal County of Berkshire Show.  “We are very grateful to both the Hendersons for hosting the celebration and to the team at Waitrose, who work so closely with the farming community, for their generosity in supporting the event.”

Wednesday 3rd May, Royal Windsor Farm Walk

50 members enjoyed a tour of the Royal Farms at Windsor and were thrilled to be able to visit the Royal Dairy at Frogmore House.

Sunday 17th May, Rogation, Streatley

The annual service was held in conjunction with the parish of St Mary’s, Streatley.

The trailers departed from the Recreation Ground – accompanied by the Wantage Silver Band. The service included stops at the River Thames, poppy fields and Poor's Piece.

A traditional tea was served after the service.

A collection was taken for the church of St Mary’s,  Streatley whose parishioners so kindly helped with the making and serving of the teas.

We are very grateful to Richard and Ed Bishop for allowing us to travel round their farm and to Rev’d Christobel Hargraves and Rev’d John Townend for giving the sermon and conducting the service.
