Society Chairman
03.03.2003

Alan Cooper has been appointed as 2003 Chairman for Newbury & District Agricultural Society, organisers of the Newbury Summer Show and the Royal County of Berkshire Show. A local man, Alan was brought up in Lambourn, Berkshire and his childhood memories include a journey by two trains and a bus to get to the County Show, which was then held at Elcot Park Showground, near Newbury.

Alan's major involvement with the Society started when he joined the Cattle Committee in the late 1980's and became Chairman in 1991. Alan is married to Debbie, who has been a regular equestrian competitor at Society events for many years. The couple share an enthusiasm for showing horses and during the season their yard near Lambourn is a hive of activity.

One of Alan's first major duties as Chairman is judging the regional Food and Farming Challenge, an educational competition sponsored by the Society, which is open to secondary schools across Berkshire. The Society's support is part of its education programme to give young people a better understanding of agriculture and the countryside. Alan will also be present at the Newbury Summer Show being held at Newbury Showground on 28th/29th June.

Alan is a chartered accountant and a partner at the Newbury office of the leading national firm, Horwath Clark Whitehill. He has been involved in many local events including the Newbury Spring Festival and other local charities.
