Scarecrows show the way to learn!
New Look Harvest Centre and Education Tent make Learning Fun
16.09.02
Look out for the comical scarecrows at the Royal County of Berkshire
Show – they will be pointing the way to a new-look, lively,
Harvest Centre. An animated talking tractor, ‘Tractor Ted’ (farming’s
answer to Bob the Builder!) and video will give children an entertaining
tour of how bread, potatoes and milk are produced. By going through
the farming year the young people will be able to recognise crops
and in a fun way gain a better understanding of what goes on in
the fields around them.
The practical examples of farming will also be displayed as judging
for the traditional crop competitions takes place in the marquee
and visitors will be able see the prize-winning entries from local
farms.
Demonstrating ‘field to plate’ will be organic farmers,
Elm Farm Research and Chieveley bakers, Shepherds, who will have
examples of their mouth-watering products.
The Harvest Centre, organised by the Newbury & District Agricultural
Society (the Society), will be an informative and fun area for
the whole family to learn more about farming. Children (up to 8
years) will also have a chance to enter Tractor Ted’s colouring
competition.

A packed new Education Tent, (replacing Schools)
will feature a performance area as well as over fifty displays
of students’ work. Participating schools come from West Berkshire
and North Hampshire and include day nurseries, after school clubs,
primary, secondary and independent schools.
This extended marquee reflects the Society’s strong commitment
to education and young people and will include examples of work
from the Food and Farming Challenge, which the Society sponsors
in Berkshire.
The marquee, sponsored by Gowrings, will for the first time have
a stage where five primary schools Englefield, Basildon, The Ilsleys,
Welford & Wickham and Firtree will give a variety of musical
performances, including their school choirs.
New exhibitors to the Education Tent will be the Life Long Learning
Partnership and West Berkshire Education Business Partnership.
