Local ploughman, David Janaway from Welford Farms was declared
Champion Ploughman at the Newbury & District Agricultural
Society's annual Ploughing Match on Saturday 19th October 2002.
David came first in Reversible Ploughing, took the Oakes Brothers
Cup and was awarded 'Best Ploughing with a John Deere Tractor'.
Held at Englefield Estate, Theale, by kind permission of the Benyon
family, just under fifty ploughmen, and a lady, from across the
country competed in horse ploughing, vintage and conventional classes.
Large crowds enjoyed a horse logging and steam ploughing demonstration
and all day the tractor trailer rides, which gave a running commentary
on the ploughmen's skills, were packed.
Ian Williams from Hastings took the top accolade in the horse
ploughing with Bew and Harvey. Eighteen-year-old Ethel Worthington
from Doncaster took second place beating father, Robin, who came
third.
Mr D Mobbs from Didcot received both the PJS Cup for the Champion
Vintage Ploughing and the James & Cowper Cup for Reserve
Champion Ploughman. Mr C Belcher from Maidenhead received the John
Day Cup for Conventional Ploughing and Mr P Hiscock the M Lawrence
Cup for the winner of the Reversible Ploughing. Mr John Knight
from Reading took top honours in the vintage tractor trailed class.
Newbury Building Society was the major sponsor with support also
provided by

Chairman of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society Mike
Bowden commented, "It was a splendid event and pleasing to
see so many families and people enjoying the magnificent surroundings,
while watching some of the country's top ploughmen in action."
Commenting on the day's ploughing Mr Bowden continued, "The
conditions were perfect as heavy rain early in the week had softened
the ground and gave the competitors a chance to test their skills. "
