22.11.02

Local ploughman, David Janaway from Welford Farms was declared Champion Ploughman at the Newbury & District Agricultural Society's annual Ploughing Match on Saturday 19th October 2002. David came first in Reversible Ploughing, took the Oakes Brothers Cup and was awarded 'Best Ploughing with a John Deere Tractor'.

Held at Englefield Estate, Theale, by kind permission of the Benyon family, just under fifty ploughmen, and a lady, from across the country competed in horse ploughing, vintage and conventional classes.

Large crowds enjoyed a horse logging and steam ploughing demonstration and all day the tractor trailer rides, which gave a running commentary on the ploughmen's skills, were packed.

Ian Williams from Hastings took the top accolade in the horse ploughing with Bew and Harvey. Eighteen-year-old Ethel Worthington from Doncaster took second place beating father, Robin, who came third.

Mr D Mobbs from Didcot received both the PJS Cup for the Champion Vintage Ploughing and the James & Cowper Cup for Reserve Champion Ploughman. Mr C Belcher from Maidenhead received the John Day Cup for Conventional Ploughing and Mr P Hiscock the M Lawrence Cup for the winner of the Reversible Ploughing. Mr John Knight from Reading took top honours in the vintage tractor trailed class.

Newbury Building Society was the major sponsor with support also provided by
Barclays Agricultural Banking, Martin & Co., Dreweatt Neate, Ford Fuel Oils, James and Cowper and NSR Communications.

Chairman of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society Mike Bowden commented, "It was a splendid event and pleasing to see so many families and people enjoying the magnificent surroundings, while watching some of the country's top ploughmen in action."

Commenting on the day's ploughing Mr Bowden continued, "The conditions were perfect as heavy rain early in the week had softened the ground and gave the competitors a chance to test their skills. "
