Favourite Returns with New Name

After last year’s cancellation, due to foot and mouth, the
Newbury Summer Show is back with a new name, scores of new attractions
and trade stands and many old favourites.
Over forty per cent of the 75 trade stands will be on Newbury
Showground (junction 13/M4) for the first time. From practical
handy gardening tools to exotic plants, wellies to handmade silver
jewellery, kites to chimineas, patio furniture and plants to toys
and a Chelsea Flower Show garden designer.
Also from Chelsea, in their famous red tunics, will be a group
of old soldiers from the Royal Hospital. The pensioners, all gardening
enthusiasts, are visiting as guests of show organisers, the Newbury & District
Agricultural Society.
In the Hobbies marquee local enthusiasts will demonstrate their
spinning and weaving, embroidery, photography, lace-making, woodcarving
and turning skills. Also attending: Vignette three-d picture boxes,
Newbury Scale Model Club, the Astronomical Society, the Guild of
Straw Craftsmen and Reading Microscopic Society.
On Sunday (30th) some 50 Historic Commercial Vehicles will enter
the Showground at the end of the 2002 Ridgeway Run. The vehicles,
all over 20 years old, are coming from East Anglia, the West Country
and Lancashire to take part in the 50-mile run that starts at Henley-on-Thames.
Organised by the South Midlands area of the Historic Commercial
Vehicle Society the vehicles, including a 75 year old van, will
remain on display for the afternoon.
Also on Sunday will be the popular Fun Run with the first race
(7 & 8 years old) starting at 11.00am and other age groups
(9 & 10), (11 & 12), (13 & 14) following in turn. All
finishers of the flat, off road course receive a prize.
Not to be missed is the International Orchid Show, Question Time
for Gardeners, Horticulture and Food marquees, Small Animals, Poultry,
Antiques Fair and Saturday’s Teddy Bears Party.
Tickets, available on the gate are: Adults - £5.00, Senior
Citizens - £3.00, children under 16 and members of the Newbury & District
Agricultural Society: Free. The Show is open: 10am – 5pm.
