The varied attractions and trade exhibits at the first Newbury
Summer Show attracted a record Saturday 4,200 crowd with a weekend
total attendance of 8,100. Show organisers, Newbury & District
Agricultural Society attributed Sunday’s slighted reduced
numbers to the World Cup Final as gate entries escalated after
2.00pm.
Previously known as the Garden & Leisure Show last year’s
event was cancelled due to Foot and Mouth Disease.
Scores of exotic orchids from countries as far as Australia, Thailand,
South America, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Berkshire’s
own Plested Nursery drew enthusiasts and the curious amateur to
the Newbury International Orchid Show. Trophies for Best Society
display went to Northamptonshire Orchid Society with East Midlands
Society the runner up.
Local rider, James Fisher from Sonning, won Saturday’s major
International Show jumping Trial on Idle Dice with David McPherson
from Kent second on Lafitte and Peter Murphy from Staffordshire
third on Atlantis. Rowan Willis on Rabanna won Sunday’s Second
Round Horse and Hound Foxhunter Competition, which is a Horse of
the Year qualifier and sponsored by Reading’s T A Fisher
and Sons.
In the Busy Lizzie competition Shaw cum Donnington Primary won
Most Flowers, category, Parsons Down Primary – Best Plant
and Hungerford Primary – Best Log Book. Berkshire College
of Agriculture (BCA) provided primary schools with the Busy Lizzie ‘plugs’ and
presented the winners with trees for their school grounds.

Presenting the prizes were: Cllr. Frances Berry, TV broadcaster
Andy Craig, Richard Benyon, President of Newbury & District
Agricultural Society and Patrick Hogan of Hogan’s Music.
A 1936 Denis coach, one of the Historic Commercial Vehicles taking
part in the 2002 Ridgeway Run which terminated at Newbury Showground
on Sunday, caught the eye Michael Bowden, Chairman of Newbury & District
Agricultural Society and Ian King, who had brought the 20-seater
coach from Guildford received the Chairman’s Trophy.
Commenting on the Show Heather Brown, Chairman of the Newbury
Summer Show said, “It was an action and fun-packed weekend
and we were delighted that so many local people showed their skills
and interests in the varied displays and marquees. The Newbury
Summer Show is now a favourite in the local calendar of events.”
